A computational theory of child overextension

چکیده
Overextension—the phenomenon that children extend known words to describe referents outside their vocabulary—is a hallmark of lexical innovation in early childhood. Overextension is subject extensive inquiry linguistics and developmental psychology, but there exists no coherent formal account this phenomenon. We develop general computational framework captures important properties overextension reported separately the previous literature. operationalize as probabilistic inference over conceptual space draws on fusion knowledge from semantics, deep neural networks, psychological experiments support both production comprehension. show how minimally parameterized explains young comprehensive set noun-referent pairs previously child speech, it also predicts behavioral asymmetry children's overextensional comprehension lab settings. Our work offers theory for origins word meaning extension supports single-system view language

15 صفحه اولOverextension in early language development.
This research explored overextension in the early vocabularies of six children, followed in a language diary study from I; 0 to I; 8. , Results indicated that only one-third of the first 75 words acquired by each child were ever overextended. A small set of high-frequency, early acquired words accounted for a disproportionate number of overextensions. Overextensions were classified into three t...
متن کاملA Theory of Child Adoption
A Theory of Child Adoption Women can bear own children or adopt them. Extending economic theories of fertility, we provide a first theoretical treatment of the demand for adoption. We show that the propensity to adopt a child increases in the degree of own altruism, infertility, relatedness to the child, costs of own child birth, and any adoption-specific monetary return that is received net of...
متن کاملA Theory of Child Targeting
There is a large empirical literature on policy measures targeted at children but surprisingly very little theoretical foundation to ground the debate on the optimality of the different instruments. In the present paper, we examine the merit of targeting children through two general policies, namely selective commodity taxation and cash transfer to family with children. We consider a household ...
متن کاملA Computational Theory Of Dispositions
1. I n t r o d u c t i o n Informally, a disposition is a proposition which is preponderantly, but not necessarily always, true. Simple examples of dispositions are: Smoking is addictive, exercise is good for your health, long sentences are more difficult to parse than short sentences, overeating causes obesity, Trudi is always right, etc. Dispositions play a central role in human reasoning, si...
